You do not have to cry it out! There are other methods of sleep training other than cry it out. Cry it out is a very effective method of sleep training but NOT the only one!
Depending on the age of your little one and their personality there may be some tears no matter what you do. You have to remember you are making a change and most of the time little ones resist the change. It's your job to be consistent with the change you are making and asking them to make. Remember, you are teaching your little one to fall asleep independently. It is no longer your job to get them to sleep.
No cry sleep solutions work for some depending on age and temperament as mentioned before. You really have to find the best fit for your family and your parenting style. Some no cry/minimal tear sleep solutions are listed below:
Shush/pat-you shush your little one and pat their back in a steady rhythm. You would continue to do this to calm your baby until he/she falls asleep.
Pick up/Put down- place your baby in their crib drowsy but awake. As soon as they cry you pick them up and do what it takes to get them calm again. Once they are calm place them back in their crib. You would do this until they fell asleep.
Slow elimination of props - find out whatever sleep prop your little one uses to fall asleep. Slowly take that prop away and promote independent sleep. Each night you would take it away sooner and sooner until they no longer needed it to fall asleep.
